Magic And Mystery Of Westville Published

Westville's new coffee-table book, The Magic and Mystery of Westville, has been published. An advance printing of one hundred copies sold out during the first two hours of sale on October 24. Additional copies are now available for sale.

The debut of the book took place at the Springer Opera House in Columbus. Photographer Mike Haskey and author Billy Winn were on hand to autograph copies of the printing at the gala event. The two artists were never idle in the 99 minutes it took to sell the books -- their pens worked constantly. Indeed, beyond the stock on hand, a number of reserved copies of the book were also sold.

Mike Haskey spend fifteen months exploring Westville in search of the endless changes of light playing throughout the Village. Since Westville is different from other modern subjects--no electricity and therefore no artificial lighting--Mr. Haskey was able to capture on film the spirit of the Westville mission. That is, he was able to reveal the images of life before specialized technology changed our way of life.

Billy Winn reached into his own vast knowledge of the rural Chattahoochee Valley to write the text for The Magic and Mystery of Westville. The resulting narrative is the best summary in print of the character of the black and white people who settled West Georgia between 1827 and 1860.

Mr. Haskey has won many awards for excellence as a photographer for the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. Mr. Winn, a native of Columbus, is editorial page editor for the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer.

The Springer has recently been renovated as part of the "Columbus Challenge." The book-signing took place in the Springer Saloon, a beautiful and important resource which provided the perfect setting for the Westville event.

Miriam's Cafe (1350 Thirteenth Street, Columbus) provided the refreshments for the event, and guests enjoyed several rounds of bruschetta, sandwiches, quiche and other hors d'oeuvres. The Westville staff suggests that The Magic and Mystery of Westville is an ideal Christmas present because of the beauty of Mike Haskey's photography, the skill of Billy Winn's text, and the support that the book gives to the continuation of Westville's educational programs.

Copies are $25 each plus $3 shipping (plus $1.75 tax for Georgia residents only). To order a copy by mail, please send your check along with recipient's mailing address to: Westville, P. O.
