Preservationists Tour Westville

Westville hosted an historic preservation tour of Westville and Stewart County on September 23 and 24 for members of the Georgia National Register Review Board and their guests. State Senator George Hooks of Americus and State Representative Gerald Greene of Cuthbert met with the tour participants to voice their support of historic preservation as an economic tool for the county.

The Review Board is a committee of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division (HDP). The HDP staff receives nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, puts the nominations in order, and submits them to the review board. Those nominations which are approved by the board are then sent on to the National Register staff for final inclusion.

Westville thanks the many people who assisted in making this tour a success.
Mayor Faulk, Sen. Hooks, Rep. Greene, Division Director Luce and Commissioner Patterson met with the Review Board, staff and guests at the Beddingfield Inn.

As part of the meeting, Westville hosted a tour of the county, which included Westville, Singer-Moye Indian Mounds, West-Moye Plantation, Green Grove Baptist Church and School, The Bedingfield Inn, and the Lumpkin and Richland Historic Districts. The Bedingfield Inn hosted an hors d'oeuvres party after the tour, where Sen. Hooks, Rep. Greene, Richland Mayor Olan Faulk, and County Commission President Stonie Patterson met with the group. Lumpkin Mayor Ed Cannington was out of state on business.

A special guest was Atlanta Journal editor Jim Wooten, who enjoyed the tour. Charlotte Frazier, the new chair of HPD's African-American Network, also enjoyed the tour as did Donald Beall, president of the Stewart County African-American Heritage Society. HPD Division Director Ray Luce and Deputy State Historic Preservation Officers Carole Griffith and Richard Clous were present as well.

Westville Executive Director Matthew Moye is the 1999-2000 Chair of the Georgia National Register Review Board.
