Holiday Cheer Shared at Westville’s Yuletide Celebration

Lumpkin, Ga. (2001) - Westville “Georgia’s Working 1850 Town” invites visitors to experience the warmth of Christmas with a pre-industrial holiday season full of spirit and tradition on Saturday afternoons in the Village during December.

The LIGHTING OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE will take place at the Singer House on December 22 at 2 p.m. The event re-creates a tradition which German immigrants brought with them to America.

Christmas tree lightings did not spread to the general Southern population until the last years of the 19th century.Using hand-crafted candles made by Westville’s very own crafters, the lighting of the Christmas Tree is accompanied by group singing and readings of “The Night Before Christmas” and the Biblical Christmas Story. Yule Log cake and wassail will be served following the lighting.

As Westville closes out the Christmas Season, THE BURNING OF THE GREENS is held on Saturday, December 29. The natural greenery used to decorate Westville’s buildings in early December will be set ablaze at 2 p.m., symbolizing the passing of the old year. As the decorations are ignited, village bells begin to ring welcoming in the new year.
