Around the Town

First Westville Blacksmith Dies
George Cobb

George Washington Cobb of Richand, Georgia, died at age 89 this month.
Mr. Cobb and his brother W.C. Cobb started up the shop at Westville in 1969. He was a founding member of ABANA, the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America, which was founded in the Westville Shop in 1973. At the time of the founding of ABANA, it was estimated that America had only fifty practicing blacksmiths, of which Mr. Cobb was one. ABANA now has a membership of about 5,000 smiths.
His contribution to the trade of blacksmithing is greatly appreciated by a grateful community of modern smiths.

Wiese Family

We’re very pleased to have David, Veronica, Ashley, Rebecca and Victoria Wiese as a volunteer family. Thanks to Veronica we now have the Doctors Office interpreted for visitors. Veronica has researched period medicine and treatments and has collected many examples of plants used in medicine in the 1850’s. Her husband David works in the Climax Church telling about the history of the church and Preys. denomination in this area. Daughter Ashley is learning to weave rag rugs and has worked as an interpreter with Jeanette in the Bryan Worthington and Singer House. The two youngest daughters Rebecca and Victoria work in the Stewart Academy telling visitors about the building and can be seen on the streets of Westville demonstrating some of the children’s games from 1850.
